Arguably one of the most important, but often ignored aspects of weight management is the psychology behind why we over-eat, or eat when we are not really hungry. This can present itself as comfort-eating or habit-eating.
We believe that the initial weight loss is relatively more easy than managing to keep it off. Behaviour change is essential for sustained weight loss and talking therapies can help prevent weight regain. RIO works in partnership with a commercial provider of talking therapies that can help with weight management or any other aspects of behaviour change.
Because of our interest in all things metabolic, our highly skilled and experienced staff can offer personalised advice on diabetes care. For patients with Type 2 Diabetes there are a range of different medications that are available, which include tablets and injections, and each type of medication have a different effect on weight. Some are likely to cause weight gain, and some can help with weight loss (although not licensed as weight loss medications).
We can advise on whether your current diabetes medications are “weight-friendly” or not, and whether you might benefit from a change in therapy.
RIO is able to prescribe weight loss medications to help with losing the weight, whilst working on behaviour change and interventions to help keep the weight off. There have been many weight loss medications that have been available over the years but RIO will only prescribe those that have been proven with evidence to be effective and safe. Many over the counter weight loss products have never been proven to be effective, and over the years there have been medications that have been shown to have questionable safety. Fortunately Dr Capehorn is an expert in weight loss medications and feels happy to recommend any of the medications that are currently approved for use in the UK and Europe. Currently we are happy to consider prescribing:
Saxenda (Liraglutide 3.0mg daily injection)
Mysimba (Naltrexone 8mg / Buproprion 90mg twice daily prolonged release)
Xenical (Orlistat 120mg three times daily tablets)
RIO is a “Mentor Centre” for the commercial weight loss company Lighterlife, that offers a range of products to help with weight loss. This includes Lighterlife Total, which is an example of a true nutritionally complete Very Low Calorie Diet.
These are medically approved by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence, and provide less than 800 kcals of food per day, but are nutritionally complete, meaning you do not become deficient in any vitamins or minerals etc.
Weight loss can be comparable to that achieved by bariatric surgery. Evidence suggests these are effective, should be offered on the NHS prior to being considered for bariatric surgery and are a cost-effective intervention for significant weight loss.
Lighterlife also offer other programmes, together with their new Lighterlife Fast options for those who favour the %:2 intermittent fasting diets. RIO can advise on which may be best for you and can offer their Food packs at a reduced cost.
This is a currently under-diagnosed condition, that is potentially fatal, but can certainly affect quality of life and other medical conditions. A significant proportion of the population will have this condition without even realising it, and without having been screened or tested for it. It is very associated with other medical conditions and if you have hypertension, diabetes, or other medical conditions it is worth questioning whether your sleep could be a contributing factor. We can offer a range of services related to the screening, diagnosis and treatment of certain sleep disorders such as Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA).
At RIO we are very experienced as assessing patients as to whether they are appropriate for, and would benefit from, weight loss surgery, such as gastric band, sleeve gastrectomy, or gastric bypass surgery.
For 8 years RIO provided this service for the NHS for the whole of the Rotherham population, and was one of only a few specialist “Tier 3” centres that provided all of the services recommended by the 2013 NHS Commissioning Board Clinical Policy for Complex and Specialised Obesity Surgery. We can help advise you on whether you might do well with weight loss surgery, and support you before and after the procedure.
RIO will also be offering a free “clothes-swap” service. As people lose weight, they no longer need their extra-large clothing.
A new wardrobe of clothing can be very costly. If they intend to continue to lose weight they will not want to spend much on smaller sizes that will soon be too large again. This facility relies on the kind donations of clothing from previous RIO patients.
The clothing will often be used but we try to ensure that everything is of good quality.
Educational group sessions, which are held in our own on-site educational facilities, are currently available on the following topics (for patients or healthcare professionals):
